Meeting Description:

The conference 'The Language of Medicine - From its Genesis to the Culture and Ethics of Communication' will be hosted by the Department of Social Sciences and Medical Humanities, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia from May 10-11, 2012. 

Call for Papers:

The conference aims at bringing together scholars from all linguistic subfields working on any aspects of language and medicine, as well as others from interdisciplinary backgrounds to discuss the relationships between language, medicine and ethics. 

These include, but are by no means limited to the following topics:

- History and development of the language of medicine
- Medical and healthcare terminology
- Medical discourse
- Communication in medicine and healthcare
- Cultural aspects related to the language of medicine
- Semantic approach to the language of medicine
- Sociolinguistics of the language of medicine 
- Contemporary challenges of neurolinguistics
- Psycholinguistics and the language of medicine
- Cognitive linguistic approach to the language of medicine
- Sign language
- Ethics of medical communication 
- Political correctness in medicine
- Pragmalinguistic approach to the language of medicine
- Medical translations
- Teaching the language of medicine 
- Acquisition of medical register

The selected topic may be approached from one or more perspectives.
