Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Description:

The Department of Linguistics, University of Oregon is seeking an assistant
or associate professor with a specialization in second language acquisition
and/or teaching, beginning 16 September 2012. This position will be closely
associated with our Language Teaching Specialization MA program with both
teaching and some administrative requirements in that program. This MA
program attracts many international students, and prepares students for
careers in teaching any second/foreign language, including English, Swahili,
Portuguese, Korean, Farsi, and several Native American languages. The
Department also offers core courses in the undergraduate Second Language
Acquisition and Teaching Certificate program (http://slat.uoregon.edu), and
contains the American English Institute (http://aei.uoregon.edu), providing
additional opportunities for interaction with SLT faculty and students.

We seek a candidate with experience and demonstrated strength in second or
foreign language teaching across proficiency levels and/or teaching settings,
as well as a commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching and
mentoring, including teacher education. Candidates should have established
research in SLT and/or SLA, and should connect well with our international
outlook, emphasis on empirical research methodologies, experience in
minority language preservation and revitalization, and other existing strengths
of our department. We are particularly seeking candidates with expertise and
a strong record of research and publication in one or more of the following
areas: Applications of current research to language teaching methods, e.g.,
testing and assessment, curriculum design, instructional technology;
psycholinguistics or sociolinguistics of second language acquisition and/or
bilingualism; endangered language revitalization; teaching and learning of less
commonly taught languages.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research
profile and contribute to service requirements. Teaching expectations include:
undergraduate courses in general linguistics and second language
teaching/acquisition; teacher preparation courses; graduate level courses in
SLA/SLT, and development of other courses, including graduate seminars,
plus mentoring graduate student research at MA and PhD levels. While this
appointment is wholly within Linguistics, there will be opportunity to interact
with faculty and students in allied departments and programs, e.g. language
teaching departments, Psychology, the Center for Applied Second Language
Studies (http://casls.uoregon.edu/), Northwest Indian Language Institute
(http://pages.uoregon.edu/nwili/) and the World Languages Academy
(http://wla.uoregon.edu/).

PhD in Second Language Acquisition/Teaching, Linguistics or related field
required by September 16, 2012. Salary commensurate with qualifications.
Applications only accepted via http://academicjobsonline.org. Include cover
letter, research and teaching statements, representative publications, and
names and contact information for three references, including at least one
who can address your teaching. Letters of reference and teaching evaluations
are not required with the initial application.

Position open until filled. Review begins December 28, 2011. We will conduct
preliminary interviews at the LSA in Portland, January 2012. The University of
Oregon is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution committed to
cultural diversity and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and
working environment.
