Description:

The Institute for Computational Linguistics (ICL) at Heidelberg University
invites applications for a research associate position in the EU-funded project
EXCITEMENT on multilingual semantic processing. This position can
be filled by a Postdoc or a PhD student.

The goal of the EXCITEMENT project is to develop generic semantic
'engines' or platforms for robust textual inference that are applicable across
languages and linguistic frameworks. These inference platforms will be
leveraged for unsupervised text exploration on customer interaction data.
Concrete systems will be developed for English, German, and Italian. The
other project partners are Bar-Ilan University, DFKI Saarbrücken, FBK Trento,
Almawave S.r.l, NICE Systems, and OMQ GmbH.

At Heidelberg, the project will be led by Sebastian Pado. Work will focus on
cross-lingual and cross-framework interoperability and multilingual resource
acquisition for textual inference. The ideal candidate will have a PhD or
Master's degree (for the Postdoc and PhD position, respectively) in
computational linguistics or computer science/linguistics with a specialization
in NLP. Prior experience with semantic processing, machine learning, corpus-
based methods or statistics are highly desirable. Strong programming skills
(Java, C++, or Python) are required. Fluency in German is a plus.

ICL at Heidelberg (www.cl.uni-heidelberg.de) is a lively research environment
and one of the largest centers for computational linguistics in Germany. PhD
students can take part in the joint doctoral program 'Semantic Processing'
(semproc.cl.uni-heidelberg.de) run in collaboration with the Heidelberg
Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS).

The appointment is for 3 years, with a start date of 1 January 2012 or soon
thereafter. Salary is paid according to the German TVöD 13 scale (100% for
postdoc, 50% for PhD student).

Review of applications begins at once and will continue until the position is
filled. Applications received by 31 October 2011 are guaranteed full
consideration. Applicants should send a statement of research interests,
university transcripts and a CV to
