Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Language Acquisition; Syntax

Meeting Description:

We cordially invite you to attend the workshop on Input and Syntactic Acquisition being held on January 5th, 2012 as a satellite workshop of the 2012 annual meeting of the Linguistic Society of America in Portland, Oregon, and collocated with the 2012 workshop on Psychocomputational Models of Human Language Acquisition. The goal of this workshop is to examine the relationship between the input children receive and the eventual knowledge speakers attain. Every theory of language acquisition requires the input to play a causal role in the attainment of syntactic knowledge, but theories vary in the exact nature of this causal role - ranging from those with minimal linguistic presuppositions about the form of possible knowledge to those with very rich presuppositions.

Given this, we have invited 4 leading researchers to present their recent research and views on the process of syntactic acquisition:

Misha Becker, University of North Carolina
Alexander Clark, Royal Holloway University of London
Bob Frank, Yale University
Virginia Valian, City University of New York
(There will also be a talk by the organizers, Lisa Pearl and Jon Sprouse of the University of California, Irvine)

More information, such as the schedule, abstracts, registration, and location information (the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower) can be found at the workshop website:

http://www.socsci.uci.edu/~lpearl/CoLaLab/isa2012/

Registration for this workshop is free, though we do ask all attendees to register through the link on the website for administrative purposes. We also encourage all attendees to register for the LSA annual meeting if they plan on attending other LSA events. We hope you can join us!

This workshop is possible thanks to the generous support of the National Science Foundation and the PASCAL2 Network of Excellence.
