Migrating through Alternative Spaces in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literature and Linguistics

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce its 20th annual colloquium. The conference is a joint effort with the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian literature areas of the department, so please feel free to pass this call for papers throughout your department.   

The histories of both the Iberian Peninsula and the American continent have been articulated through a multiplicity of migrations. Cultural migrations, ethno-racial migrations, political displacements, exile, migrations of thought and epistemologies and shifting borders are a few aspects of migration that contribute to the narratives of our present historical moment. These migrations produce hybrid identities that often locate those who participate in them in liminal, displaced, queer or alternative spaces. The intellectual elaboration on these cultures, individuals and alternative spaces can provide us with new ways of understanding our interactions on personal, national and global levels.

Linguistics: Laura Colantoni (University of Toronto)
Hispanic Literature: Bradley Epps (Harvard University)
Luso-Brazilian Literature: Onésimo Almeida (Brown University) 

Call for Papers:

By way of this call for papers, we would like to create an opportunity for students of literature, film, cultural studies and linguistics to present their research, theories and elaborations on the issues raised by migrations and the alternative spaces they create. Likewise, we invite students of linguistics to present their findings in an attempt to better understand the modifications and changes that these various migrations create.  

While the conference theme, 'Migrating through Alternative Spaces', certainly speaks to the areas of language contact, bilingualism, second (or third) language acquisition and sociolinguistics, linguists of varied pursuits are certainly invited to submit proposals for presentation.

Topics may include, but are not limited to: 

Linguistics: 

Language Contact - Bilingualism - Variation - Second (or Third) Language Acquisition - Pragmatics - Phonetics - Phonology - Syntax - Semantics - Pedagogy - Language Policy - Language Attitudes and Ideology

Literature, Film and Cultural Studies: 

Cultural Migrations - Shifting Borders - Political and Social Exile - Citizen Security and Migration - Border Violence - Labor and Economic Migration - Cultural Contact in Migration - Migration Policy in Cultural, Literary and Film Studies - Transnational Studies - Travel Narratives - Transculturation - Migration and Intellectual History

Deadline and Proposal Guidelines:

Please submit an abstract of up to 300 words by November 18, 2011 to colloquiumut at gmail.com and include 'Conference Proposal' and your name in the subject line. Do not include any personal information on the same page as the abstract, but instead please provide a cover page that includes the title of the presentation, name, affiliation and e-mail address. The organizing committee also encourages submissions of panels (not to exceed three papers) organized around a specific topic or theme.
