Dr Annemarie Hari died December 5, 2012 in Basel, Switzerland. She was a
distinguised linguist with SIL in Nepal, training many junior colleagues and
working for the betterment of the Yohlmo language community. Her special
contribution was to the study of tone in the Tibeto-Burman languages of Nepal.
She had a good ear, was a good language learner and very quickly made herself
at home in the languages of Nepal. She used this ability for the benefit of
others by compiling one of the very first Nepali language learning courses,
''Conversational Nepali'' in 1971.

After attending Ken Pike's series of workshops on Nepal linguistics in the
early 1970s, she made the initial breakthrough in the description of tone in
Western Tamang. Annemarie then moved on to study the Thakali and Kagate
languages, where she succeeded in proving the validity of her tone insights
for a number of related Tibeto-Burman languages.

With this background, Annemarie then went on to Edinburgh where she completed
her studies for the Ph.D. with her dissertation, ''Tone in Lhasa Tibetan''
(1977), which was revised and published in 1979 in the Asian-Pacific series of
Language Data, under the title, ''An Investigation of the Tones of Lhasa
Tibetan.''

In addition, Annemarie was a prime mover in many other publications, including
the Yohlmo-Nepali-English Dictionary (2004) and the Yohlmo Grammar Sketch
(2010).
