Description:

Tibetan in Digital Communication: Corpus Linguistics and Lexicography 

Applications are invited for one doctoral studentship tenable for 3 years
starting on 1 October 2012. The PhD student (to be supervised by Dr Nathan Hill)
will join the project with the brief to describe the morphosyntactic categories
of the Old Tibetan verbal system and examine that system's transition to
Classical Tibetan.

As yet, no research at all has been conducted on the Old Tibetan verbal system.
The Tibetan indigenous grammatical tradition has a system for classifying
Classical Tibetan verb stems. However, this system fits Classical Tibetan data
impartially and has been of little use to help philologists improve their
understanding of actual texts. The description of the morphosyntactic categories
of the Old Tibetan verb which results from this thesis will be employed in the
design of the verb entries in the Old Tibetan dictionary to be compiled
subsequently. Within linguistics, the thesis will contribute to knowledge of
historical syntax and to typological investigations. Within Tibetan studies, it
supplies robust empirical data to aid the exploration and interpretation of the
language of Old Tibetan texts. As a result, it is certain to bring increased
rigour in the study of Old Tibetan culture, history and literature. 

The successful candidate must have a good reading ability in Classical Tibetan.
An ability in other languages of Tibetan studies (French, German, Chinese,
Japanese) or familiarity with computational/corpus linguistics are highly desirable.

The candidate will be a collaborator on the research project and should expect
to devote a substantial amount of time each week to the reading and annotating
of Tibetan texts. This work must constitute the collection of data to be written
up in the thesis. A thesis on Old Tibetan syntax is anticipated, but the
ultimate choice of topic is at the discretion of the candidate (subject to
approval by the project directors).
