Dissertation Abstract:

This dissertation tries to investigate the process of literary translation,
specifically literary tropes. How culture is controlling this process and
how the equivalents are chosen are the main problems to be focused on. The
translation of Molavi's Mathnawi by Reynolds, A. Nicholson is the corpus of
study. Metaphor as it is defined by modern linguistics is the main concern
of the research.

Through a thorough review of literature, several frameworks are chosen.
Newmark's model (1988b) and Harvey's framework (2000) are the ones to be
considered for the study of translation of Metaphor and Culture-based
Concepts respectively.     

Metaphors found in Book 1 of Molavi's work are classified according to the
framework and the findings are shown by the bar-graphs. Then Nicholson's
translation techniques were observed with care.   

A Metaphorical Signification and a Metaphor-nature-based model are then
introduced by the study. The model is applicable not only to the corpus
under study, but to almost every literal and cultural interlanguage
translation. Harvey's framework was applied to the Culture-based Concepts
and once more the translator's techniques were investigated. 

The ultimate outcome is a framework proposed by the research, suggesting
techniques for translation of different Metaphorical expressions according
to the nature of metaphors, the concept which is aroused by the research
earlier.
