Description:

In connection with the research project 'Networks of Knowledge' financed by 
the Austrian Science Fund and directed by Bernhard Hurch, the Linguistics 
Department of Karl-Franzens University (Graz) announces the opening of two 
doctoral research positions to conduct thesis work related to the project as 
scientific research collaborator ("wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter"). Using the 
resources of the Hugo Schuchardt Archive, the project aims to examine 
significant aspects of the history of linguistics and of the research networks 
that were in place in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of 
the 20th century. The specific focus of the project will revolve around Creole 
languages, Romance linguistics, Basque studies, specific topics in general 
and historical linguistics, contact languages, and plurilingualism.

Duration of the project: 3 years
Start date: October 1st  2012 
Required background: Masters degree in linguistics or a related discipline. A 
good knowledge of Romance languages. Knowledge of German is necessary, 
but we will consider applicants who are willing to learn it intensively, ideally 
before joining the project.

Requirements: scientific curiosity and interest (evidenced by participations in 
conferences and publications); willingness to use electronic means of 
information management and to engage in team work; commitment to register 
in the PhD program of the Linguistics department (with a possible external co-
supervisor). The theme of the thesis may be directly linked to the project or 
more loosely related.

Fund's guidelines.
