Meeting Description:

Evidentiality is concerned with speakers’ source of information that they mark as evidence for their claims about the actual world. Evidentiality can be expressed in lexically and grammatically various ways. Languages can mark different types of evidentiality, such as inferential evidentiality, related to epistemic modality, and sensory evidentiality, based on perception. Other important types of evidentiality that are particularly important in the context of narration, are reportative and quotative evidentiality. Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the linguistic field of evidentiality. 

Topics to be addressed during this two-day workshop are the various types of evidentiality markers found in the languages of the world, degrees of their grammaticalization, the relation between evidentiality and epistemic modality, and between evidentiality and perception.

Call for Papers:

We welcome abstracts for 30-minute talks on evidentiality, including 10 minutes discussion. In particular, we would like to receive papers that provide empirical evidence for evidentiality such as corpus data or experimental data. Hopefully, the workshop will open up new directions for fruitful research and future cooperation within this exciting field. 

This is a low-budget workshop, so there is no possibility for reimbursement of your travel and accommodation costs. The workshop itself however is free of charge and lunch and dinner will be taken care of for all workshop participants. 

Abstracts should not exceed one page and can be sent electronically as PDF-files or Word documents to the following address: t.trompenaars at student.ru.nl. Please include your name, affiliation, and contact information in the email message to which the abstract is attached. The abstract itself should be anonymous.
