Call Deadline: 16-Feb-2014

Meeting Description:

The Institute of English at the University of Silesia, Poland has the pleasure to announce the 3rd international conference:

Linguistic Snapshots: Language and Cognition 3
16-17 May 2014

The conference aims to focus on an area that has become increasingly significant for general linguistics of the last three decades: the lexico-grammar continuum.

First indicated as an unexplored area of research as early as 1987 by Ronald Langacker (1987: 34-36), it was shortly followed by an explosion of publications – both in the form of studies dealing with either the semantics of grammar or grammatical semantics, as well as whole theories: Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1990, 1991, 2000, etc.), Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1996), or Radical Construction Grammar (Croft 2001). At the same time, it must be noted, not only Cognitive Linguistics has profited from indicating the lexico-grammar continuum. The last decades have witnessed a growing number of publications that take this area into consideration, a grand example being Huddleston and Pullum (2002).

To expand the research in this attractive field from various perspectives, the central theme for the conference this year is:

Explorations In Lexico-Grammar Continuum

Our distinguished guests this year are:

Professor Ronald Langacker from the University of California, San Diego
Professor Ewa Dąbrowska from Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne

Conference Languages:

The languages spoken at the conference are English and Polish.

Conference Venue and Fee:

The conference will take place in Sosnowiec, 5 Grota-Roweckiego, Poland. The conference fee is 130 euros / 500 PLN and it includes conference materials, coffee breaks, and conference dinner.

Call for Papers:

The central theme for the conference this year is 'Explorations In Lexico-Grammar Continuum.'

Research in such an area, we believe, does not presume any specific perspective or theoretical stance. Therefore, we invite abstracts for presentations addressing any part of the continuum: lexicon, semantics, morphology, syntax, grammar, as well as any combination of the above. It will be valuable, though by no means necessary, to indicate whether or not lexicon (semantics) meets grammar and if so, to what extent: do they permeate or, rather, complement each other. The perspective we assume is both synchronic and diachronic.

Please submit abstracts, in the language of the presentation, no longer than 250 words (Times New Roman, 12pt) in the Word or PDF format to lislac at us.edu.pl by 16 February 2014. The body of the mail should contain the following information: the author’s first name and surname, title of the presentation, affiliation with postal contact details, the author’s email address. All the abstracts will be blind peer reviewed by the Scientific Committee. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 28 February 2014, registration opens on 1 March 2014. Presentations will be allocated 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions.

Further information and the registration form will be soon available at: uranos.cto.us.edu.pl/~icfsla/lislac/.

Organising Committee:

Andrzej Łyda, prof.
Grzegorz Drożdż, Ph.D.
Iwona Sznicer, M.A.
Paweł Zakrajewski, M.A.
Monika Zasowska, M.A.

Publication:

A reviewed monograph will be published out of selected articles. More detailed information will follow.
