Linguistic Field(s): Linguistic Theories; Phonetics; Phonology

Call Deadline: 22-Jan-2013

Meeting Description:

The reasons to reflect on the notion of syllable are still a lot and all very interesting, both on its state of the art and with regard to the perspectives of its application to the linguistic sciences.

It appears to be particularly important to analyse this notion through four great points of view that consequently represent the essential subject sections of the congress:

(1) what we call the ‘classicist’ point of view, from which are discussed the suggestions on the origins, the nature and the historic-cognitive value of the syllable, as well as from the anthropological perspective of the studies on the syllabic writing systems of the Mediterranean basin: this section will be opened by the invited speakers Carlo Consani, Paola Cotticelli Kurras and Giovanna Marotta;
(2) the ‘theoretical’ viewpoint, that concerns the epistemological status of the notion of syllable and focalizes the attention on the role that it plays at the moment and will play in the future in the field of linguistic theories: this section will be opened by the invited speakers Federico Albano Leoni, Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk and Jacques Coursil;
(3) the point of view so-called ‘descriptive’, which takes into consideration the analytical relevance of the syllable for the study of all different languages, particularly for Italian: this section will be opened by the invited speakers Claudia Crocco and Marie-Hélène Côté;
(4) the last but not least one is the ‘experimental’ viewpoint, that, in collaboration with physicists, mathematicians, jurists and other specialists, works out the methods of voice analysis and produces the essential acquisitions in phonology and experimental phonetics: this section will be opened by the invited speakers Massimo Pettorino, Francesco Cutugno and Philippe Martin.

The registration fee is of 100 euros for the speakers, 60 euros for professors, 30 euros for PhD students. All information can be found on the website of the Special Interest Group on Spoken Communication, http://www.gscp.it/GSCP_official_website/la_sillaba_it.html. Further questions can be asked at the email address pescara2013.lasillaba at gmail.com.

Call for Papers:

The abstracts of the colleagues who are interested in this congress have to indicate the section which they aim to take part in; they should not exceed 1000 words, including keywords (5 at the most) and references (not more of 15), and they should be sent as an anonymous ‘.doc’ document by 22 January 2013 at the email address pescara2013.lasillaba at gmail.com. The official languages of the congress will be Italian, English and French.

All abstracts will be reviewed by the International Referee Committee of the congress. The reports approved will be published as chapters of the volume on the syllable: the papers have to be submitted to the Redaction Board by 13 July 2013.

Important Dates:

Abstract submission deadline: 22 January 2013
Notification of acceptance: 12 February 2013
Congress programme: 26 February 2013
Congress: 11-13 April 2013
Paper due: 13 July 2013
