The University of Arizona, in addition to a Master’s Program, now offers a new Ph.D. degree in Hispanic Linguistics.

Our Ph.D. program offers unique characteristics and opportunities:
- Faculty representing a diversity of areas in Hispanic linguistics, including bilingualism, biological origins of language, heritage and second language pedagogy, phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, syntax, and translation studies.

- Students have access to laboratory facilities (such as the Applied Phonetics and Psycholinguistics Lab), both in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and in others.

- An ideal location for field work –Tucson is one of the oldest Hispanic communities in the Southwest and situated just miles from the border with Mexico--providing the students with the unique opportunity to carry out field research among the local bilingual population. 

- Involvement with two journals (Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies  and Divergencias, a student run e-journal), the organization of the annual Graduate Student Symposium and the monthly Department of Spanish and Portuguese Linguistics Colloquium (DSPLC), and the assistance for faculty run conferences such as the 39 Linguistics Symposium on Romance Language (2009), the 6th International Workshop on Spanish Sociolinguistics (2012), and the forthcoming Laboratory Approaches to Romance Phonology.

In addition to Hispanic Linguistics, the University of Arizona hosts some of the most prestigious programs in the country in Linguistics, Linguistic Anthropology, and Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT), allowing for a vibrant intellectual community of linguists. 

Funding opportunities include:
- Graduate Assistantships in Teaching, including the opportunity for advanced graduate candidates to teach introductory linguistics courses and other advanced courses for majors.
- Funding for conferences and field research grants due to the University´s connection to Title VI Resource Centers in Latin American Studies and applied linguistics (CERCLL).
- Funded positions as assistants to the director on our study abroad programs in Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico and Spain.
- Research Assistant positions that allow students to contribute to the research projects of faculty members.
