Description:

The University of Delaware Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Phonetics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is expected to begin September 1, 2014. The successful candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in Linguistics with a specialization in phonetics by the start of the appointment.

UD's College of Arts and Sciences is home to the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science, which runs a nationally-renowned PhD program in Linguistics, a Master’s degree in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, a Bachelor of Science degree in Cognitive Science, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics.

We seek individuals who dare to be first and will be recognized as leaders of their disciplines. In particular, successful candidates will demonstrate the drive and vision to develop an innovative, cutting-edge, and internationally recognized research program in phonetics. Preference will be given to scholars who can also contribute to the department's tradition of cooperation across sub-disciplines within linguistics and can participate actively in interdisciplinary research in cognitive science. Those whose record of research and teaching meaningfully relate to one or more of the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply: clinical speech and hearing sciences, the documentation of understudied languages, language acquisition, mathematical, statistical or computational methods in linguistic research, the phonetics-phonology interface, psycholinguistic experimentation, and/or sociolinguistics.

Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in laboratory and acoustic phonetics, anatomy and physiology of speech, and graduate courses in phonetics and in the areas of the appointee's specialization. The typical teaching load is 2+2. Other duties include supervision of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, involvement in curricular development, and performance of University and Department service.

Applicants should visit the application URL below to apply and should carefully read “Applicant Instructions” under “Resources for Applicants” tab before submitting an application. Applicants are asked to create and upload a single PDF document that includes: a) cover letter; b) statement of current and long-term research plans; c) statement of teaching experience and philosophy; d) CV; and e) three representative research publications. In the cover letter, applicants should indicate whether they will be available for in-person interviews at the 2014 annual meeting of the LSA in Minneapolis. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Dr. Jeffrey Heinz, Search Committee Chair at the contact email address below. Please instruct letter-writers to include “Phonetics Search Letter: [Applicant Name]” in the subject line of the email. Additional information may be requested at a later date. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand prior to the start of the appointment.

Review of applications will commence on November 18. All application materials shall be shared with departmental faculty. Inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Jeffrey Heinz, Search Committee Chair at the contact email address below
