Meeting Description:

This conference is devoted to the examination of ANY aspect (synchronic or diachronic; descriptive, analytic, theoretical, comparative, typological, you-name-it; treating one language or multiple languages; using sociolinguistic, experimental, computational, or whatever methodology) of any language or languages of the post-classical Balkans or of South Asia of any era.

For the past ten years, the Department of Linguistics at the Ohio State University has held a one-day or day-and-a-half workshop/conference/symposium in January around the time of the Martin Luther King Day holiday (sometimes on the day, sometimes before, sometimes after, but always around). The topics have varied but they have always been on a theme that allows for strong local representation on the program from students and faculty here at OSU and an interesting outside speaker, all consistent with local research interests. 

In 2014, this event will take place on Friday January 24 and Saturday January 25 (the weekend right after MLK Day this time around), and in keeping with the on-going John E. Sawyer Seminar at OSU comparing the Balkans and South Asia, the theme will be 'The Linguistics of the Balkans and of South Asia'. The program will feature papers by various OSU faculty and students, and a plenary address by Hans Henrich Hock of the University of Illinois, all on some aspect of the study and/or analysis of a language or languages in the post-Classical Balkans and/or in South Asia (any era).

Call for Papers:

Even with these scheduled papers, there is room on the program for about a half-dozen additional papers.

Accordingly, we solicit proposals for papers that examine some aspect (synchronic or diachronic; descriptive, analytic, theoretical, comparative, typological, you-name-it; treating one language or multiple languages; using sociolinguistic, experimental, computational, or whatever methodology) of the linguistics of the post-classical Balkans or of South Asia of any era. Please send a one-page abstract in .pdf format (no word limit, no separate page for data or references, just a single page, converted into a pdf file) to joseph.1 at osu.edu by no later than 12:00 noon on Monday November 25, with the subject line 'MLK 2014 Abstract'. Decisions on abstracts will be announced by December 2.
