Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Pragmatics; Psycholinguistics; Semantics

Description:

This position is part of a the programme "Restriction and Obviation in Scalar Expressions: The semantics and pragmatics of range markers across and throughout languages”, awarded to Dr. Rick Nouwen by the European Research Council (ERC). This programme investigates the division of labour between semantic and pragmatic mechanisms in creating scalar meanings. In particular, the projects in the programme study the distribution of epistemic as well as free choice inferences triggered by scalar expressions. It aims to derive a linguistically informed theory of the semantic-pragmatics interface.

The programme comprises two Ph.D. projects (already filled) and one postdoc project.

The current opening is for a Postdoc project in experimental semantics and pragmatics, starting date February 1st, 2014 (negotiable). The project, supervised by Dr. Rick Nouwen, develops and runs experiments that aim to identify the division of labour between semantic and pragmatic processes in the emergence of epistemic and free choice inferences from the use of scalar expressions.

The project uses standard methods from experimental (psycho)linguistics, and is informed by recent developments in formal semantic and pragmatic theory.

For background information of the (wider) programme, see the department URL above.

Qualifications:
- Applicants should hold a PhD in linguistics or a related field and should have demonstrated capacities as an experimental researcher
- Experience with formal semantics and pragmatic theory is a further requirement
- A demonstrable ability to work in a team will work in a candidate's favour

Work Conditions:
The successful postdoc candidate is offered a 12 month contract as a postdoc with the possibility of renewal with 2 years maximum, after evaluation. The postdoc will work on the basis of 1.0 FTE (0.8 is an option) and receive a gross monthly (starting) salary in the range between € 3.037.- and maximum € 3.382,- per month on a full-time basis depending on experience and qualifications. We offer a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

UIL-OTS features a stimulating, innovative, and internationally oriented research environment which offers opportunities for a broad professional development. Possibilities for conference visiting are plentiful. We offer excellent experimental facilities and computational support.
