Description:

The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognised research university with more than 14,000 students and close to 3,500 employees at six faculties. The university is located in the heart of Bergen. Our main contribution to society is excellent basic research and education across a wide range of disciplines.

The Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen, is seeking to appoint a full-time, tenured Associate Professor of English Linguistics, starting in August 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.

English is one of the subjects taught at the Department of Foreign Languages. The Department currently has over 50 permanent academic staff, 11 administrative staff, approx. 30 PhD fellows, and in addition other temporary staff. The Department conducts research and offers teaching in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish Language and Latin American Studies.

Six permanent academic staff work in English linguistics (2 professors and 4 associate professors). The Department also has doctoral fellows in English linguistics. Current research in English linguistics includes modern and historical syntax, morphology, phonology, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. The Department has links with institutions in several European countries as well as Great Britain and the USA, and the linguistic section places great emphasis on international collaboration in research, doctoral training and teaching.

Qualification Requirements:
The successful candidate must have a Norwegian doctorate in English linguistics or a doctorate from a foreign institution that is equivalent to a Norwegian doctorate. Academic work equivalent in quality and extent to a Norwegian doctorate will also be acceptable. ‘English linguistics’ is defined as research that applies modern linguistic theories and methods to contribute to scholarly accounts of the English language in a diachronic or synchronic perspective. The primary data for such studies must be substantially taken from at least one variety of English.

The successful candidate must have documented solid teaching experience. He or she must be able to teach English linguistics at all levels and supervise MA and PhD candidates. Applicants specialising in modern English grammar will be given priority.

Salary:
Salary will be paid in accordance with pay level 57 (code 1011/pay framework 24), at present NOK 473.100 gross p.a., following ordinary meriting regulations. Higher initial placement may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A pension contribution of 2% will be deducted and paid in to the state pension scheme.
