Description:

Stony Brook University (SBU), the flagship institution of The State University of New York (SUNY), invites applications and nominations for two endowed Faculty positions in Hellenic Studies. SBU is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), currently enrolling over 25,000 students and offering over 300 degree programs (baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and professional). SBU is among the leading public research universities in the Northeast, with a large and growing undergraduate and graduate population and a strong tradition of excellence in education. SBU is committed to the highest standards of academic excellence, a diverse and productive academic community, and ethical conduct in research and scholarship.

The faculty positions are part of an exciting initiative to expand Hellenic Studies and attract to SBU scholars who can energize our newly established George and Olga Tsunis Center for Hellenic Studies. The faculty recruited will help shape the direction and focus of the Center and the growth in Hellenic Studies.

Required Qualifications:
James and Eleni Tsunis Endowed Chair in Hellenic Studies: Doctorate in a topic of Hellenic Studies relevant to the language, philosophy, literature, history, or culture of Greece and Cyprus in a global context. Must have achieved tenure in a faculty position. Prominent national/international reputation for sustained publication record and scholarly accomplishments. Record of excellence in teaching, research, and service appropriate to appointment at the tenured rank of Full Professor at a major research university. Preference will be given to candidates with fluency in the Modern Greek language at native or near native level. Responsibilities will consist of research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and supervision of B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. theses. The faculty member recruited will be expected to help galvanize and concentrate all-things Greek at SBU, make the study of Hellenism a focal point, and actively interact with the Center in Hellenic Studies and other institutions on campus and beyond. Departmental affiliation will be appropriate to area of research specialization.

Peter V. Tsantes Endowed Professorship in Hellenic Studies: Doctorate in the area of Hellenic Language. The field of interest will be open as to region, period and focus. Fluency in the Modern Greek language to native or near native level. Strong publication record and scholarly accomplishments. Experience in teaching Hellenic language is preferred. Responsibilities will consist of research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision of B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. theses, and supervision of the existing minor in Hellenic studies. The faculty member recruited will be expected to interact with the Center in Hellenic Studies and other institutions on campus and beyond. Departmental affiliation will be appropriate to area of research specialization.
