Description:

The Linguistics Centre at Universidade Nova de Lisboa is looking for a post doctoral research fellow for a new FCT project (Subordination in Medieval Portuguese – PTDC/MHC-LIN/4564/2012) to study the mechanisms of complex sentence formation in Old Portuguese in the framework of Generative Grammar. The project hopes to contribute to a deeper knowledge of the grammar of Old Portuguese, and of the phenomena associated with historical variation and change.

The topics to be investigated are the following: 1) Temporal interpretation in main and in subordinate clauses; 2) Tense and Aspect and its relation to the syntax of subordination; 3) Temporal composition of infinitives; 4) The relation between verb classes and the embedded tenses; 5) Restrictions imposed by connectives on the aspectual types of predicates of the main and subordinate clause; 6) Positions for the verb and the subject in the subordinate clause; 7) Restrictions on the selection of the embedded clause.
For detecting the temporal interpretation of the clause it will be necessary to study different syntactic and semantic factors, which is possible through the systematic analysis of the relevant constructions:
finite subordinate clauses introduced by lexical complementizers; infinitival subordinate clauses; adverbial subordination; infinitivals with and without explicit subjects.

The source of the data on Medieval Portuguese will be the Corpus Informatizado do Português Medieval (CIPM, available at cipm.fcsh.unl.pt).

The successful candidate should have a background in diachronic generative syntax and a strong knowledge of both Old and Modern Portuguese.
