Many years ago (1994 to be exact), Professor Edith Moravcsik posted a wonderful list of popular, reader-friendly books on linguistics, entitled SOME BEDTIME READINGS IN LINGUISTICS, which was followed by two supplements:

(1) Jan 12 1994:
http://www.umich.edu/~archive/linguistics/linguist.list/volume.5/no.101-150

(2) Feb 8 1994:
http://linguistlist.org/issues/5/5-195.html#1

(3) update by Katie Haegele, Sep 3 2003:
http://linguistlist.org/issues/14/14-2328.html#1

I have been recruited to teach a semester of Intro to Ling this year, and would like to provide a list like this of books the students can read and report on for extra credit. But the list badly needs updating!

I am currently tidying up the list and putting in a few newer works I personally know of, but I know I'll miss a lot of really good books. It would be great if LINGUIST readers could send over your recommendations for additions to this list. (Recommending books YOU authored is fine - no false modesty, please!) As soon as possible, though - the new semester starts on September 9! Please send your suggestions to:

I'll post a link to the updated list as soon as it's ready.

Many thanks!
