Description:

Applications are invited for a post-doc position in syntax at the University
of Vienna, Austria. This is a three-year position with a tentative start date
of August 1, 2015. The candidate will contribute to the project ‘Parameters of
Possession’ funded by the Austrian Science Fund, which investigates
cross-linguistic connections between double object alternations and the
syntactic expression of possession.

The project focuses on Arabic as an exemplar of the languages in which
possession is expressed by a preposition supported by an auxiliary, where you
say ‘An umbrella is to John’ for ‘John has an umbrella’, and builds on
literature implicating a connection between this syntactic format and that
found in the ‘prepositional’ double object construction, where you say ‘Mary
gave an umbrella to John’ as an alternate of ‘Mary gave John an umbrella’.
Familiarity with Arabic is therefore highly preferred for this position,
though candidates familiar with another language that expresses possession in
the AUX+Preposition format may apply. The working language of the project is
English. Knowledge of German is not necessary but useful for life in Vienna.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in linguistics in hand by the start date of the
position (which is somewhat flexible). Duties include research in theoretical
linguistics, regular publication of research results and presentation at
scientific conferences. Applications should be submitted by January 31, 2015,
and must include: 1) a cover letter detailing any relevant qualifications,
particularly any prior work in the area of the research project (either
possession and/or double object constructions specifically or argument
structure, case theory or other potentially related issues in general), 2) a
curriculum vita, 3) at least one sample research paper, and 4) names and
contact information of at least two potential referees.

Please submit applications through the University of Vienna Job Center
