Meeting Description:

The Institute of English Studies at the University of Łódź is proud to announce that the 9th international conference on Practical 
Applications of Language Corpora (PALC 2014) will be held over 3 days, 20 to 22 November 2014 (arrival day 19 November), at the 
University of Lodz Conference Centre in Łódź, Poland.

Since 1997, the PALC conferences have served the international community of corpus linguists by providing a useful forum for the 
exchange of views and ideas on how corpora and computational tools can be effectively employed to explore and advance our 
understanding of language both in theoretical research and different areas of practical application.

Plenary Speakers:

The following scholars have accepted our invitation to address the conference as plenary speakers:

Prof. Susan Hunston (University of Birmingham, UK)
Prof. Martin Haspelmath (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany)
Prof. Ian Gregory (Lancaster University, UK)
Prof. John Osborne (University of Savoie, France)
Prof. Adam Przepiórkowski (Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland)

Call for Papers:

Topics:

A special theme of this year's PALC edition will be the applications of corpora and corpus linguistics methods in social sciences 
and humanities. Special thematic sessions are planned on the following topics:

- Corpora in Social Sciences and Humanities
- Corpus Approaches to Evaluative Language
- Diachronic Corpus Studies
- Uncovering Time in Language

We also accept paper proposals on the following topics:

- Corpus-based Computational Linguistics
- Contrastive Studies and Language Corpora
- Discourse and Language Corpora
- ESP and Language Corpora
- Corpus Search and Retrieval Systems
- FLA/SLA and Language Corpora
- Learner Corpora
- Multimodal Corpora
- Lexicography and Language Corpora
- Translation and Corpora
- Corpus-based Information Retrieval and Information Extraction Methods

Abstracts:

Abstracts of papers should be up to approx. 600 words long and submitted by e-mail to the organisers. Presentations should last 
30 minutes including demonstrations, questions and discussion.

The deadline for abstract submission is 10 September 2014.

Publication:

A selection of conference papers will be published following a peer-review process.
