Meeting Description:

“Workshop on Cognition, Grammar, and Corpora”

Organized by the Finnish Cognitive Linguistics Association (FiCLA) at the 41st Finnish Conference of Linguistics in Turku, May 10, 2014

Due to its usage-based nature, cognitive linguistics has always been theoretically and methodologically committed to studying language in its actual real-life contexts. One way of doing this is to look at how linguistic phenomena are realized in various corpora, and therefore various corpus-based, corpus-oriented or corpus-related studies have been essential in cognitive linguistic research since the early days of the discipline. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the various questions that corpora raise in the study of grammatical phenomena from the cognitive perspective. The language of the workshop is English, and the workshop will be attended by one of the plenary speakers of the conference, Professor Laura Janda from the University of Tromsø, Norway.

Call for Papers:

We encourage papers from all fields of cognitive-oriented language research dealing with corpora or corpus-related questions. Also papers that deal with questions related to corpora from the theoretical perspective are welcome. The possible topics of the papers may relate (but are not limited to) the following:

- The benefits and challenges of using corpora in the study of grammar
- The use or misuse of corpora in the study of grammatical phenomena
- The methodological consequences of corpora in the study of grammar
- The quantitative vs. qualitative results in corpus-based studies of grammar
- The theoretical or philosophical problems related to corpus-based study of cognition
- The future perspectives of corpus-based studies in cognitive linguistics

Abstract Submission:

Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted by email as attachments in doc, docx or rtf format to esa.penttila at uef.fi by February 3, 2014. Notifications of acceptance will be announced by February 28, 2014. The length of the talks is 30 minutes with 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
