Description:

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Linguistics for Massey University’s Wellington Campus. The appointee will have a PhD and active research portfolio in discourse analysis and/or media linguistics and will be expected to teach courses in Language and Communication, Discourse, Language and Identity, and Multimodal Discourse Analysis. 

Duties will include post-graduate supervision and collaborative work with colleagues from across Massey University’s campuses to develop and strengthen the linguistics curriculum in the Bachelor of Communications and Bachelor of Arts qualifications. 

Massey is a distance provider and contribution to the distance offerings of the Linguistics programme will be expected.

Job description

To enhance the learning and qualification outcomes of Massey's students and the scholarly outputs of the University by undertaking an effective programme of teaching; undertaking research including research supervision of students; engaging in the pursuit of external funding; providing administrative and professional service to the University and broader academic or professional communities.

Key accountabilities

Teaching/Supervision 

1. Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. 
2. Develop and teach major curriculum components of courses. 
3. Coordinate and administer the teaching of subjects. 
4. Supervise the research activities of graduate and undergraduate students and assist in the supervision of students/research projects at a postgraduate level. 
5. Undertake continuing personal professional development. 
6. Act as main contact person for the Linguistics programme on the Wellington Campus. 

Research 

1. Undertake an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme or participate in team-based research. 
2. Publish papers or other scholarly works in academic journals and review papers. 
3. Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences. 
4. Generate research funding. 

Service to the Community 

1. Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s Charter and Strategic Plan. 
2. Assist the School to develop an environment which gives effect to the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi. 

University Responsibilities 

1. Serve on University and/or School committees. 
2. Ensure the observance of University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices. 
3. Contribute to the development of a School working environment of teamwork and cooperation. 

Any other duties as required by the Head of School.

Qualifications

- PhD qualification and demonstrated teaching and research expertise.
- Experience
- Demonstrated ability as a teacher with an awareness of up-to-date teaching methodologies and technological applications to teaching. 
- Some familiarity with computer-assisted and Web-based teaching methods is preferred. 
- A record of published research in Linguistics.
- Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, Personal Attributes, Behaviours, Competencies
- Willingness to adapt to a variety of teaching demands, with imagination, initiative and commitment to help develop a successful Linguistics programme. 
- Communicate well with students. 
- Plan, prepare and create effective teaching materials for both internal and distance learning. 
- Energy and enthusiasm for promoting the study of Linguistics.
