Focus: The theme for the School is phi-features and their role in agreement and the syntax and semantics of Wh-constructions, especially of Indian languages.

The 8th version of the internationally renowned annual Summer School organized by Formal Studies in the Syntax and Semantics of Indian Languages (FOSSSIL), LISSIM 8 will take place in Solang Valley, Himachal Pradesh, from May 24-6th June, 2014. Surrounded by the Himalayan mountains, the Summer School venue is ideal for communal living and learning, devoid of the usual distractions of a city, town or even a touristy hill station. The admission to the School is highly competitive and since the number of student participants is limited to twenty, prospective participants are therefore requested to apply as soon as possible. Students from India are requested to apply for membership to FOSSSIL by writing an email of intention to secretary.

The teaching faculty will consist of the following established experts in formal linguistics:

Registration Instructions:
Acceptance to the School is based on the past record, interest in the subject, recommendation from supervisor, performance in the essay competition and a final interview. This LISSIM will explore the features of wh-/phi. For the purpose of the essay, the following task has been set. Your essay for the selection process may dwell/conjecture/speculate on any or both of the following topics, preferably discussing phenomena, and even more preferably from one of your own languages:

- It is standardly assumed that phi-features are inherent and interpretable for nouns, but there are facts of natural language such as the existence of grammatical gender which should lead us to qualify this assumption. Do phenomena relating to the other phi-features of number and person also compel us in the same direction? How will such a qualification be phrased, and what will its consequences be for the operations that rely on phi-features?
- It is commonly held that wh-phrases actually bundle together two features - an interpretable Q feature and an uninterpretable wh-feature. Wh-licensing involves Probe and Matching from Cs that bear an uninterpretable Q-feature. Are these basic premises called into question the facts of echo questions and cleft questions? How?

We will evaluate entries for originality and novelty, so you are advised not to replicate standard analyses of textbook examples of of the above issues. Entries must not be more than 2 A4 pages long, and typeset in a font no less than 11 pt in size with 1 inch margin on all 4 sides; essays exceeding the size limit will be rejected without any further considerations.

Entries must be submitted by 23rd March midnight IST, along with a brief bio-data, including a brief resume that lists the courses in syntax and semantics you have taken plus a brief write-up of your research and/or reading activities in the last year. A recommendation from your supervisor or your MA syntax teacher must be attached with your email.
