The 2016 annual meeting of the Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States, the 43nd LACUS Forum, will be held from August 2 to August 5 at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The conference theme for LACUS 2016 is ''Categories and Functions in Language and Cognition”.  While all linguists treat the ideas of categories and functions as 'basic' to explanations of language and cognition somehow, the meaning of these terms and indeed their role(s) in models of language and/or cognition vary very widely depending not only on theoretical perspectives, but also on evidential bases for these (language development, neurobiology of language, sociolinguistic and historical variation, text linguistics and so on). 

Invited Plenary Speakers will address aspects of the theme from different evidence and theoretical perspectives.

The submission page will be open to receive abstracts until March 15, 2016. Early submission is recommended for those needing time for visa or funding reasons.  The review of abstracts will be on-going until March 15. 

Besides abstracts addressing the conference theme, abstracts on all linguistic topics and in all theoretical perspectives are welcome.

Under certain conditions, LACUS permits authors who cannot travel to the conference to present via a real-time ('live') video connection. (LACUS membership and conference registration required). 

The Presidents' Prize of US $500 is awarded to the most outstanding paper presented at a LACUS conference by a younger scholar.
