Abstract:

This short grammar of the Tatar language by Angelika Landmann explains the
basics of the Tatar language concisely and clearly presented way which is easy
to understand. Charts and sample sentences from everyday language are used to
illustrate the content, which is systematically arranged according to
grammatical categories. This grammar is therefore aimed both at those who
already have previous knowledge of Tatar as well as at the linguistically
interested who have no previous knowledge and who are seeking to gain a quick
overview of the language's structures. The grammar is structured in accordance
with Landmann's previous publications, namely short grammars of Azerbaijani,
Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uyghur and Uzbek, thus allowing for a
comparative study of these Turkic languages. In addition, the grammar includes
an appendix providing overviews of the most important suffixes, German
subordinate clauses and their Tatar counterparts as well as an alphabetical
vocabulary and a subject index. The contents are presented in the modified
Cyrillic script used in Tatarstan today. (Harrassowitz Verlag 2014)
