Abstract:

Volume 5 of the »Etymological Dictionary of Old High German« contains the
letters I, J, K and L. It provides the proper etymology of many words from Old
High German for the first time. It also suggests plausible etymologies for
numerous words that were retained in New High German and previously had
backgrounds designated as »unclear« or »unsure«. Because this dictionary is
based on modern methods of studying the Indogermanic and Germanic languages,
it provides a firm basis for research into word origins and thus represents a
valuable tool for use in other linguistic disciplines. (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht
