Meeting Description:

The focus of “Dialogue Under Occupation” is the ongoing exploration of dialogue and discourse in areas of the world experiencing occupation with an eye toward resolution.

Dialogue is presented as a complex concept, requiring 1) the participants; 2) the conditions for dialogue to commence; 3) the goal(s) of the dialogue—pre-established or arrived at through the dialogue itself. First, a minimum of two parties (i.e., individuals or groups of individuals representing a side or perspective) must be present. Second, conditions may include preconditions necessary to bring the parties together, procedures for engaging in dialogue, and a certain degree of mutual respect, without which the dialogue could not proceed and will not lead to any resolutions. Lastly, the dialogue itself must have a purpose—a common, achievable goal that participants can agree upon despite their differing perspectives. Purposeful dialogue has the potential to lead to an outcome that recognizes and respects the needs of the various participants while emerging with an agreement which all parties can abide.

Occupation, however, is a complicating factor which creates a power differential between participants: the occupied and the occupiers. If dialogue under occupation is to be successful, then, the conditions must include 1) the realization that the power differential exists; and 2) the willingness of the powerful to concede their preconceived, often hegemonic, notions of their position. It must also be understood by all parties that engaging in dialogue under occupation does not mean that the less powerful or powerless are accepting the occupation in any form, but that they are willing to confront their occupiers in an effort to be recognized as having equal human rights, including the ability to make autonomous decisions about how they should live and pursue their own definition of happiness.

Call for Papers:

Introduction:

In the year that the Programme of Post-Graduate Letters (PPGL) commemorates its 45th anniversary, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), by way of PPGL, will host DUO VII, an itinerant and interdisciplinary event, between the 28 and 30 of October, 2015.

The event will gather specialists from Brazil and abroad to reflect on relevant studies in dialogue in different configurations, organized under one of three major themes: I. Dialogue in Perspective, II. Intercultural Dilemmas, and III. Expressions of Conflict.

Themes:

I. Dialogue in Perspective:
Research that deals with dialogue from different perspectives will be considered, coming from the academic production of various areas of expertise, including linguistics, literature, creative writing, as well as social and human sciences, and areas, such as philosophy, sociology, communication, education, psychology, anthropology, etc.

II. Intercultural Dilemmas:
Discussions about the complex outlook of problems faced in a contemporary, intercultural world, advancing the debate about discursive, social, and cultural aspects involved in this outlook on conflict. Within this theme, the following will be considered: theories and practices about different symbolic and discursive universes that involve the tense contacts between cultures, taking into account shocks of social, ideological, and political values. In the study of intercultural dilemmas, investigations of linguistics, literature, and creative writing will also be included, as well as social and human sciences including the aforementioned disciplines, as long as they are about the following themes: multiculturalism and transculturalism, multilingualism, cultural hybridity, culture shock, generations, beliefs and values, cultural relativism and universalism, orientalism and occidentalism, media appeals, materialism and humanism, modernity and postmodernity, individualism and community, c
ollective agency and epistemic disagreement, among others.

III. Expressions of Conflict:
Deals with the discussion of possible theoretical and practical ways of discussing different social situations of confrontation, disagreement or frustration, present in the following areas: linguistics, literature and creative writing, as well as social and human sciences, including the aforementioned disciplines. It’s based on the idea that “conflict” is also an issue that opens spaces in which it allows dialogue in its various dimensions and language expressions. Also included is research on different cultural contexts of relationships in which there are conflicts, dilemmas, and strained relations in different spheres of human activity, such as labor, art, education, politics, media, religion, medicine, environment, economy etc.
