Grade 7 - Starting salary £28,982 a year, in a range up to £37,768 a year,

We are now recruiting for a Research Fellow to work on Death Before Birth, a
project funded by the ESRC and led by Dr Danielle Fuller (U of Birmingham) in
collaboration with Professor Jeannette Littlemore (U of Birmingham) and Dr
Sheelagh McGuinness (U of Bristol). The project is a socio-legal, linguistic
study of how people in England who have experienced miscarriage, termination,
and stillbirth reach decisions concerning the disposal of the remains of
pregnancy, how their perceptions of the law impact on their decision-making,
and how they communicate their experiences and choices to those who are there
to support them. Our project partners are: The Human Tissue Authority, SANDS,
the Miscarriage Association and Ante-natal Results and Choices. The project
team will be working closely with these agencies which are both participants
in and beneficiaries of the study.

The post is full time and will start in September 2016, running for 22 months.
The Research Fellow will be based at the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston
campus. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for gathering
data via qualitative interviewing and via the collection of hospital protocols
on the disposal of pregnancy remains; and for analysing data in collaboration
with the other members of the research team. The post holder will manage the
project website and will also work with the research team on the delivery of
the public engagement and impact activities planned for the project. Further
duties will include presenting papers to relevant academic stakeholders,
co-organising a research symposium, writing articles for publication and
co-editing a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.

The successful candidate will have completed a doctorate in either medical
sociology or socio-legal studies; have expertise in empirical and mixed
methods, in particular, qualitative interviewing of vulnerable subjects;
experience of working at the intersection of health and ethnicity will be
advantageous. The successful candidate must be resourceful, flexible,
well-organised and able to work independently and as part of a team. They will
have good IT skills, an enthusiasm for collaborative and interdisciplinary
research, and ambitions to pursue a career in academia.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
