We are very sad to announce the death of Professor Christian J. Kay, Emerita
Professor of English Language at the University of Glasgow. Christian was the
Director (and one of the editors) of the Historical Thesaurus of English,
published in 2009, and was deeply involved in a number of associated projects.
She also had many other roles during her long career: she was the original
convenor of the Board of Scottish Language Dictionaries, and founder of the
Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech, and was an early pioneer in the field
that has evolved into digital humanities. Her long list of publications
reflects the range of her academic interests, and shows how active she was
until the very end of her life. She will be remembered as a dedicated and
intellectually ambitious scholar, a generous, energetic colleague who was as
kind as she was dry-witted, and an incredibly loyal and supportive friend to
all of those who had the privilege to work with her and be taught by her.
Christian died peacefully on 4 June 2016, aged 76. A fund in her memory has
been set up to support the Christian Kay Prize for outstanding undergraduate
research:
