Job Title: Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Language Technology
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Morphology

                      Sami, Northern (sme)

Description:

One Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Language Technology is available in
the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Tromsø - The
Arctic University of Norway (UiT). The position is affiliated with the CLEAR
(Cognitive Linguistics: Empirical Approaches to Russian) and Giellatekno
(Center for Saami Language Technology) research groups.

The appointment is a fixed term position for a period of 3 years.

The position is entitled “Morphological Weightlifting” and will experiment
with a novel use of finite-state models of language morphology to address
theoretical issues of linguistics, yielding better performance in natural
language processing, machine translation, and language pedagogy.
“Morphological Weightlifting” takes as its point of departure the state of the
art in scholarly debates over generation vs. storage of linguistic forms, the
effects of frequency in distribution of linguistic forms, status of the
paradigm, and the relationship between ambiguity and complexity.
“Morphological Weightlifting” will focus on Russian and North Saami with the
aim of developing methods for generalization that can be extended to other
circumpolar languages. In addition to scholarly publications, results will be
implemented in improved electronic resources for language learners and users
(interactive exercises, dictionaries, spellcheckers, etc.).

Norwegian PhD or international equivalent to a Norwegian PhD within (field of
study) is required.

The successful applicant will work with topics in the field of computational
linguistics that will interface with existing language technology resources
for Russian at UiT (finite state transducer and constraint grammar). The
successful applicant must have a Norwegian doctoral degree in linguistics,
computational linguistics or computer science, or a corresponding foreign
doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. The
successful applicant will have conducted research on language technology and
have experience with final state transducers and constraint grammar. The ideal
candidate will also have excellent knowledge of Russian and a strong
track-record indicating publication potential. Familiarity with Norwegian,
North Saami and/or other circumpolar languages is an advantage.

The applicant must provide a project proposal with a progress plan
encompassing the project’s main activities. It is a prerequisite that the
applicant will be able to complete the project within the period of
employment.

The application must be submitted electronically via the application form
available at the website below.

The application must include the following attachments:

- Letter of application
- CV (containing a complete overview of education, supervised professional
training and professional work)
- Transcripts of records and diploma supplements for completed degrees
- List of 2-3 academic referees, including contact details (name, relation to
applicant, e-mail address and phone number)
- Letters of recommendation
- Up to ten works central to the applicant’s academic production. The
applicant’s PhD thesis should be submitted as one of these works.
- List of publications
