Subject: In Memoriam: Prof. Joseph Matluck

Dr. Joseph H. Matluck, Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Linguistics, died on
June 14 at the age of 98. For over 50 years Joe was a member of our
department, officially retiring in 1987. He played a crucial role in forming
our Hispanic Linguistics program at the University of Texas. His teaching and
research on the sound patterns and intonation of Spanish, particularly Mexican
Spanish, laid a foundation for the field, and he mentored many graduate
students who are now successful professors in universities across the country.
At his passing, we are all reminded of the famous quote attributed to Isaac
Newton, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.”
For all of us who are part of the UT family in the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese, we will miss one of the giants.

After retirement, Joe continued to play a role in the department, both as a
mentor and advisor to young professors and graduate students. He continued to
live an active lifestyle, which all who dared play with him squash soon
discovered. Professor Matluck is survived by his loving wife Betty, who cared
for him constantly in his advancing illness. Our condolences to all their
family.

When funeral and memorial services are announced we will provide updated
information.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through Indiana University Foundation. We
also collect donations via eLinguistics Foundation, a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization with the federal tax number 45-4211155. Either
way, the donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your
state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the
IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the Indiana University Foundation fills in
and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
