Description:

Call for Applications for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, 2017-18

Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong
Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students
in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong's institutions.

The Department of Linguistics and Translation (http://www.cityu.edu.hk/lt),
City University of Hong Kong (CityU), is now inviting applications for the
Scheme. The Dept has an exemplary record of teaching excellence and is
internationally recognized for its world-class research. The QS (Quacquarelli
Symonds) ranking for Linguistics of CityU rose from 47th in 2011 to 29th this
year. CityU becomes the top-ranked university in Hong Kong in Linguistics.
More than 20 faculty members conduct empirically based and theoretically
informed research in the areas of theoretical linguistics, applied
linguistics, intelligent linguistics applications, translation, language and
law, and translation studies.

Applicants who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the
Dept., irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should
be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of
academic performance, research ability/potential, communication and
interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities. The minimum academic
qualification for the research degree programs is a first-class honours degree
(or the equivalent) or a CGPA over 85 (out of 100). Applicants whose first
language is not English must have a TOEFL score of at least 593 points in the
paper-based test or 243 in the computer-based or 95 in the internet-based, or
an overall band score of 7.0 in International English Language Testing System
(IELTS). A research proposal setting out the aims, outlines, and methods of
the proposed research should be submitted with the application. Shortlisted
candidates will be invited by the Department for an admission interview
(either face-to-face or via Skype.

The Fellowship awarded by the RGC provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000
(approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research-related travel
allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for the awardees for
a maximum period of three years. For Fellowship awardees who are admitted to a
4-year PhD programme in 2017-18, CityU will provide a monthly studentship at
the same level as the Fellowship awarded by the RGC for their fourth year of
study. Fellowship recipients at CityU will also be awarded scholarship at the
value of HK$ HK$71,496 (approximately U US$9,170), covers students' tuition
and on-campus hostel accommodation fees in their first year of research
studies.

Applicants must first submit an initial application to RGC through its Online
Application System (OAS) at http://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/hkphd/, and obtain a
RGC reference number by 1 December 2016 (12:00:00 GMT+8 hours). Then,
applicants are required to submit full application, together with supporting
documents, to CityU's Online Admission System at
http://www.cityu.edu.hk/sgs/oas, and quote the RGC reference number by 6
December 2016. Late applications will not be processed. The RGC will notify
the successful applicants of the results in March 2017.
