Call Deadline: 15-Oct-2016

Meeting Description:

This panel presents studies on evidentiality in discourse, focusing on the
role of evidential expressions as mechanisms by which speakers and writers
express their attitude towards the communicated content and towards the
addressee. In recent years, evidentiality has often been approached in terms
of its pragmatic effects, on its own or in conjunction with other categories
such as epistemic modality and mirativity. Some references approach concrete
expressions or types of expressions in a single language (Celle 2009; Dendale
2012; Korta & Zubeldia 2014); others are contrastive or crosslinguistic
studies (Simon-Vandenbergen & Aijmer 2007; Usonienė & Šinkūnienė 2013;
Marín-Arrese 2015; Wiemer & Socka forthcoming), and others concern different
genres or text types (Müller 2008; Marín-Arrese 2011; Ruskan 2012; Carretero
2014).

This panel aims to bring together work on these research lines, and aims to
feature contributions on the following research issues:

-Discourse-pragmatic approaches to evidential expressions, in one or more
languages. Evidentials may be studied in combination with expressions
belonging to neighbouring categories.
-Cross-genre and cross-linguistic studies on the distribution and effects of
evidentials in different types of discourse.
-Comparative studies on the discourse-pragmatic functions of evidentials and
those of expressions of neighbouring categories.

More detailed information on the panel may be found in the IPrA website.
