 “Service Encounters in the Spanish-Speaking World”

Editors: César Félix-Brasdefer & Maria Elena Placencia

The proposed edited volume takes a fresh look at pragmatic variation across
varieties of Spanish (Latin America, Spain, and US Spanish) in the
co-construction and formulation of service encounters in relation to
macrosocial factors such as gender, age, regional affiliation, socioeconomic
background and ethnicity. The highlight of the book is the analysis of
different practices of service encounters across varieties of Spanish that
have received little attention. And given the variational pragmatic approach
adopted to analyze the data, we will include chapters that contrast two or
three varieties of Spanish in comparable service encounter contexts, such as
commercial (e.g. small shops, supermarkets, cafes) and non-commercial settings
(e.g. information centers). The distribution of the data will include
face-to-face interactions as well as service encounters in a variety of online
settings. Some of the chapters in the volume cover theoretical and
methodological issues.

Topics of interest include the organizational structure of service encounters;
how they are opened and closed; how the transaction is realized; participants’
orientation to different interactional goals and lesser/greater attention to
interpersonal concerns; perceptions of appropriateness in service encounters;
the format of speech activities like requesting, complaining; polite and
impolite practices during the negotiation of service; the interplay between
macro and microsocial factors, and address practices in a variety of service
encounter settings.

Call for abstracts:

We are looking for contributions that examine one aspect of the negotiation of
service in Cuban, Dominican, Bolivian, Honduran, Panamanian, Chilean,
Guatemalan, Salvadorean or US Spanish. Studies on service encounters that
deal with Spanish in contact with other languages are welcome.

If you are interested, please send an abstract by April 15 to the editors:

César Félix-Brasdefer (cfelixbr at indiana.edu)
Maria Elena Placencia (m.placencia at bbk.ac.uk)

The abstract (300-400 words excluding references) should include a title, the
objective, theoretical framework used, data for the specific region, analysis
of the data, and preliminary results.
