March - April 2018.

The position is part of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO)-funded research
project entitled “The effects of written corrective feedback on L2 case
acquisition in the German prepositional phrase mediated by working memory
capacity and procedural memory”. The project is supervised by Katja Lochtman
(VUB), with Alex Housen (VUB) as co- supervisor. The project is concerned with
the effects and effectiveness of written corrective feedback on both (a) the
outcomes of the L2 learning process (by measuring not only the explicit but
also the implicit knowledge that learners acquire) as well as on (b) the
cognitive mechanisms believed to operate during the learning itself (attention
allocation, awareness), with a focus on German as a second/foreign language.

The candidate will prepare a PhD in Linguistics. Activities that the candidate
will perform include: develop and implement (i) theoretical concepts in line
with the focus of the research project and (ii) appropriate methodological
procedures for investigating these concepts; design and conduct multiple
psycholinguistic experiments (e.g. by means of eye-tracking); interpret the
results of the analyses and report on the project in conference presentations
and academic publications; by the end of the four-year term, submit and defend
a PhD dissertation based on the project.

Profile: Master degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language &
Literature, Psycholinguistics, Psychology or in Language Learning and
Teaching, with a master thesis on a topic relevant to the project; excellent
command of English and German. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset; knowledge of
inferential statistics and statistical software (e.g. SPSS, R) is an asset, as
are programming skills in E-Prime or Experiment Builder. The position requires
residence in Belgium, preferably in or near Brussels.

Remuneration is in accordance with the official Belgian scales for academic
personnel and bursaries.
