Assistant Professor of Spanish, Coordinator Lower-Level Spanish Courses

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Sam Houston State University
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty member at the rank
of Assistant Professor to coordinate the department’s elementary and
intermediate Spanish language curriculum (1000 and 2000 levels, approximately
1500 students per academic year) and teach 4 courses per year. 

The candidate will teach primarily at the undergraduate level (lower-division
Spanish language courses) and, occasionally, at the advanced undergraduate and
graduate levels in field of specialization. Duties include but are not limited
to: syllabus and curriculum design; program assessment; recruitment of
students and instructors; training and supervision of experienced adjunct
Spanish instructors as well as graduate teaching assistants; scheduling
courses and labs; working with office staff on enrollment management; planning
professional development workshops and actively participating in the
department’s Language Learning and Teaching Workshop Series. The coordinator
reports directly to the department chair.

Qualifications: PhD in Spanish with specialization in Foreign and /or Heritage
Language Education, Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition or Applied
Linguistics; experience developing curriculum for Spanish Heritage Learners
and Spanish for Specific Purposes; minimum of 5 years college /university
level teaching experience using task-based and proficiency-based instructional
methods with demonstrated instructional excellence; knowledge of current
concepts and methods in foreign language learning and instruction, including
those related to online course delivery; experience and/or willingness to
teach online courses; familiarity with ACTFL standards and OPI scales;
outstanding scholarly potential in field of specialization; outstanding
interpersonal and organizational skills as well as demonstrated capacity to
provide effective goal-oriented leadership to instructors. Teaching
responsibilities are both at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas
(located 70 miles north of Houston), occasionally, at The Woodlands Campus (40
miles south of Huntsville), and online. 
In addition to those qualifications stated above, preference will be given to
candidates with previous language-program coordination as well as
specialization in testing and assessment practices applied to
college/university-level language learning.
