Job Title: 1 PostDoc / ERC project on Microcontact
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Language Documentation; Syntax; Heritage Italian languages

Description:

1 PostDoc available in the ERC project "Microcontact. Language variation and
change from the Italian heritage perspective".

Post-doc - Auxiliaries, differential object marking, deixis and subject
clitics in diachrony

The PostDoc will work on diachronic aspects of the syntax of heritage Italian
languages in contact across the three main Italian emigration countries in
America where Romance languages are spoken: Argentina, Brazil, Canada/Québec.
His/her task will be to analyze the development of the syntactic phenomena
listed above in regional Italian languages, both in the earliest centuries of
their existence and in more recent years, in contact with standard Italian.
The PostDoc will also need to develop tools to assess the stability of certain
phenomena and, together with the PI and the PhDs, will contribute to a theory
of linguistic microchange that will compare endogenous/diachronic change with
change in contact.

Requirements for the PostDoc include:

- A (soon to be completed) PhD in Romance diachronic generative syntax or
diachronic syntax of a Romance language;
- Extensive knowledge of generative Romance diachronic syntax;
- An outstanding publication record;
- Excellent English oral proficiency, academic writing and presentation
skills;
- Fluency in one or more of the contact languages of the project: French,
Spanish, Portuguese;
- Proven ability to work in team and to supervise junior scholars;
- Ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team;
- Excellent organizational, social and communication skills.
