Subject: Obituary: Tullio De Mauro (1932-2017)

 
Tullio De Mauro (1932), Emeritus Professor of General Linguistics at
''Sapienza'' University of Rome, passed away on January, the 5th, 2017, in
Rome.

Professor of Philosophy of Language from 1974 to 1996, Tullio De Mauro
introduced General Linguistics in Italy, a discipline he taught at the
''Sapienza'' from 1996 to 2007, when he was received Professor Emeritus.

De Mauro served as Minister of Public Education (2000 – 2001) for the
Government of Giuliano Amato.

A member of the Accademia della Crusca (2008), and of the Accademia dei Lincei
(2012), Professor De Mauro was awarded Doctor honoris causa by the Catholic
University of Leuven (1999), the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Lyon (2005), the
Waseda University in Tokyo (2008),  University Sorbonne Nouvelle (2010),
University of Geneva (2013) and several others.

His works on Italian language (''Storia linguistica dell'Italia unita'', 1963;
''Grande Dizionario Italiano dell'uso'', 1999-2018) and his commentary on the
''Course in General Linguistics'' by Ferdinand de Saussure (1967) are among
his most precious heritages.
