Description:

The role and its responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this role will work closely with Dr Christopher
Lucas on the AHRC Leadership Fellows project ‘Arabic and contact-induced
language change’, collecting linguistic data from native speakers of different
Arabic dialects resident in London, co-editing a handbook on the topic of the
project, and assisting in the organisation of workshops and conferences
associated with the project. The goal of the project is to push forward
understanding in three understudied domains with significant potential for
fruitful integration, namely: theoretical modelling of contact-induced
language change; the role of language and dialect contact in the evolution of
Arabic and its neighbours; best practice in LADO (language analysis for the
determination of origin) in relation to Arabic.

Skills and experience:

Applicants must hold a doctorate on a topic in Arabic or historical
linguistics and have had a broad training in one or more of the following
areas: general structural linguistics; Arabic dialectology; historical
linguistics. They should be native or near-native speakers of both Arabic and
English. They should have a high standard of written English, for both
academic and non-academic audiences, and the ability to edit the academic
writing of others. The ability to plan and conduct primary linguistic research
is essential, as is either experience working with LaTeX or the abillity to
learn to use LaTeX.
