Description:

The role of the Junior Linguist is to contribute to a number of tasks to
improve automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS), and mobile
keyboard technologies. Areas include:
- Verbalizers for converting written domain to spoken domain (e.g. $5 → five
dollars)
- Normalizers for cleaning & formatting language model training data
- Pronunciation rules and converters between phoneme inventories
- Creating and improving mobile keyboard layouts
- Rolling out features and testing infrastructure for new ASR & keyboard
languages
- Documentation
- Annotating lexicon entries and providing phonemic transcriptions according
to guidelines
- Evaluating current system outputs, finding errors, and providing suggestions
for possible improvements

Minimum Requirements:
- Basic programming skills (e.g. Python, shell scripting, regular expressions,
SQL, etc.)
- Knowledge of phonetics, phonology, semantics, syntax, morphology and
lexicography including phonetic/phonemic transcriptions
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Attention to detail and good organizational skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced, self-motivated work
environment

Desired Skills:
- Degree in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, or related field
- Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts, learn in-house tools
- Keen interest in technology, computer-literate
- Fast and accurate keyboard typing skills
- Editing, grammar check, and proofreading skills
- Research skills

Project duration: 6 months (with potential extension). This is a fixed-term
contract, not a permanent position.
