Job Title: Assistant Professor in Computational Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago seeks to fill a
tenure-track assistant professor position with an expected start date of July
1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter. We are looking for a candidate
whose primary interests are in computational linguistics (including modeling).
The successful candidate will have a desire and ability to explore the
interaction between traditional linguistic theory and analysis, on the one
hand, and cutting edge technologies involving machine learning, data sciences,
or other computational approaches, on the other. The successful candidate will
play a key role in developing and strengthening our graduate and undergraduate
curriculum in computational linguistics, and will interact with colleagues
engaged in theoretical, experimental, and descriptive linguistics. The
successful candidate will join a vibrant community of scholars interested in
computation and computational modeling at the University of Chicago, as well
as at the Toyota Technological Institute-Chicago. The teaching load for
tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year, graduate and
undergraduate levels; additional responsibilities include service on
departmental and university committees and advising. A PhD is required by the
start date of appointment.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and descriptions in
separate documents of their research interests and of their teaching interests
and experience (that is, research and teaching statements). In the cover
letter, applicants must provide a URL on which they have posted their research
that they believe is most relevant to this search. Ideally they will place
both papers (in pdf form) and work describing computational projects. Three
letters of recommendation are also required, and the cover letter should
include the names of three academic references who applicants have asked to
send letters.

All materials, except for recommendation letters, must be submitted
electronically at the link below (requisition number 03522). Letters of
recommendation should be sent by the letter writers to
ComputationalLinguisticsSearch at uchicago.edu. The Department will begin
evaluating applications on December 1, 2017, and will continue to receive
applications until January 30, 2018. No application materials will be accepted
after January 30, 2018.

The Department will interview candidates at the LSA Annual Meeting in Salt
Lake City, January 4-7, 2018, and will also conduct interviews by Skype.

Position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
