Description:

The Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at
Mānoa invites prospective students to apply to for its 36-credit Master of
Arts program, which offers a unique opportunity for students to specialize in
optional tracks:
Language Education
Second Language Acquisition
Language and Social Interaction
Critical Second Language Studies
Language Assessment, Measurement, and Program Evaluation

The MA program prepares all students to independently design, carry out, and
analyze their own research studies. Preservice and seasoned language educators
often investigate questions surrounding classroom materials, teacher
development, critical pedagogy, action research, the effects of pedagogical
practices on language learning, and the use of technology in the classroom.

Financial support is offered in the form of tuition assistance (up to $26,000
for top prospective applicants; U.S.-based and international). Students are
also eligible to apply for departmental and university-wide graduate
assistantships, which include a tuition waiver, stipend, and employer
contribution to a health plan. In the past 5 years, 30% of MA in SLS students
have secured a graduate assistantship, and 97% of MA students received some
form of financial support.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa holds an unparalleled place in the Pacific,
and is home to the School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the National Foreign Language
Resource Center, the UHM Chinese Language Flagship Program, the Korean
Language Flagship Center of Hawaiʻi, and the East-West Center. In addition to
studying at an internationally leading institution in second language studies,
students will also benefit from living, working, and learning in this diverse
setting.
