Subject: English; General Linguistics; Language Acquisition: Senior Lecturer, Stockholm University, Sweden

University or Organization: Stockholm University
Department: English
Job Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Web Address: https://www.english.su.se/
Job Title: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in English Linguistics
Job Rank: Senior Lecturer

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The successful applicant is expected to teach various courses in English
linguistics and English proficiency, including courses in the teacher’s
programme. The position also entails supervision of bachelor’s and master’s
theses, as well as some administrative duties. The applicant is expected to be
engaged in research and to initiate, organize, and lead research projects;
should publish articles in international peer-reviewed academic outlets,
primarily in the area of second language acquisition; and should apply for
external research funding to strengthen the department’s international
profile. The position also involves administration, and the applicant should
be prepared to carry out administrative tasks when necessary.

Applicants should have a PhD in English linguistics, or corresponding research
qualifications, as well as demonstrated teaching skills. Documented experience
in second language acquisition is an advantage. The teaching skills should be
well-documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of
the teaching activities. Teaching skills include the planning, implementation
and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. The
candidate must have the ability to cooperate, as well as the ability and
general suitability required to perform the duties well.

In the evaluation of candidates for this position, special emphasis will be
placed on research skills in English linguistics and, to an equal degree, on
teaching experience within this subject area. Documented experience in second
language acquisition is an advantage. Experience in teaching and supervising
teacher candidates is also considered an advantage. In addition, attention is
given to administrative skills and the ability to interact with the
surrounding community. Strong emphasis will also be placed on the documented
ability to cooperate well with colleagues.

Following a qualitative overall assessment of skills and abilities, the
University will primarily consider those candidates who are deemed to have the
best prerequisites to perform and develop the relevant tasks, as well as to
contribute to a positive development of the department’s operations.

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least
15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. Candidates lacking
formal advanced education in teaching theory, corresponding to a minimum of 15
higher education credits, and who are judged not in possession of
corresponding teaching skills, must pursue such studies during the first two
years of employment.

Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but
the candidate should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative
duties that require proficiency in Swedish within two years of employment.
Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and
with equal opportunities for all.
