Meeting Description:

The University of Ottawa is host to the bi-annual Congress of the Réseau
francophone de sociolinguistique (RFS).  The RFS is a research network
supporting the work of researchers who, throughout the world, are interested
in sociolinguistics and who work mainly or sometimes in French. Throughout its
congresses, colloquiums and public activism, the RFS has shown its interest in
thinking through the social character of language. As a result, the network is
involved in public debates around language and education, orthography and
literacy, state languages, minority languages, migration and citizenship as
well as the place of languages in the global economy. With the theme Languages
of value and the value of languages, the Ottawa edition of the Congress
invites researchers who want to think through the symbolic, economic,
political and social processes whereby various linguistic practices and
discourses become valued. 

While this event will be held in French, we are hoping to play a role in
promoting a dialogue between francophone and other sociolinguistic traditions
by providing sub-titled videos of the keynotes.


Call for Papers:

À l’occasion du Congrès 2019 du RFS, « Langues de valeur et valeur des langues
», nous invitons les participant.e.s à conceptualiser la notion de valeur, en
tenant compte de sa polysémie, pour en faire un outil permettant de saisir les
rapports qu’entretiennent les locuteurs avec diverses pratiques langagières.
Nous sollicitons ainsi des communications qui s’intéressent aux espaces de
construction de la valeur des langues, que ce soit en termes de légitimation,
de contestation, de résistance, de reproduction ou de compétition.

Propositions de communication : les propositions de communication seront d’une
longueur de 300 mots maximum.

Panels : les panels seront composés de 5 plages de 30 minutes, qui incluent la
présentation et la période de discussion, pour une durée totale de 2h30 (ces
plages peuvent inclure : des communications, des répondants et un temps de
discussion avec la salle). Nous accepterons également un nombre limité de
doubles panels. Les organisateurs devront envoyer le descriptif du panel (300
mots maximum) et les résumés des communications individuelles (300 mots
maximum).

Les propositions seront sélectionnées par le comité scientifique (double
évaluation anonyme).

Frais d’inscription : Nous espérons recevoir une subvention pour cette
conférence ce qui aiderait à réduire les frais d’inscription. Ceux-ci seront
finalisés et communiqués en mars 2019.

Calendrier :

14 septembre 2018 : envoi des propositions de communication ou de panel (via
le formulaire)
30 novembre 2018 : notification d’acceptation ou de refus des propositions
30 avril 2019 : programme final
