JEAP Special Issue: Halliday's influence on EAP Practice. 

Michael Halliday died on April 15th 2018 in Sydney, and his passing has met
with an outpouring of messages around the world expressing sadness as well as
appreciation for the extensive and hugely influential work he has done for
linguistics, and for language teaching. 
On the BALEAP mailing list, it was suggested that JEAP should commemorate his
work in a special issue that examines the influence that his work has had on
the practice of EAP. As Christina Healey said, 'we have all benefitted so much
from his thinking, even if we didn't always know it.'

Specifically, we would like the focus to be on the teaching, learning and
professional practice of EAP. 

At last year's BALEAP conference Susie Cowley-Haselden and Laetitia Monbec
reported on a survey of BALEAP members where they asked about the theories
that guide EAP practice and the extent to which they are visible to
practitioners and to students. SFL was top among them (alongside genre theory
and corpus linguistics). The special issue of JEAP aims to further explore how
Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics has influenced EAP practice. 

There are three ways that you can contribute: 
- Submit a proposal for a Full-length Research Article or a shorter Research
to Practice paper for inclusion in the special issue. Please send a 500 word
abstract/outline to Sheena Gardner (sheena.gardner at coventry.ac.uk) by
September 15th, 2018. You should make clear in the abstract which aspects of
Halliday's work you are focusing on, and what aspects of EAP practice they
inform. 
- Respond in writing, or through video or audio recording, in around 500
words, to the prompt: How have specific aspects of Halliday's work influenced
your EAP practice? The written, audio and video texts will be collated for the
Special Issue. 
- Review articles for this special issue. If you would like to contribute as a
JEAP reviewer for this special issue, please let us know. We are looking for a
good mix of more theoretical SFL scholars and practising EAP professionals. 
Sheena Gardner (sheena.gardner at coventry.ac.uk) and Jim Donohue
(j.donohue at qmul.ac.uk) are the editors for this special issue, to be published
in 2019, supported by the JEAP editors, Paul Thompson and Hilary Nesi. Please

Timeline:
June 2018: first call for contributions
July 2018: second call for contributions
August 2018: reminder about abstract deadline
September 15 2018:  deadline for article abstracts/outlines
November 2018: response to abstract/outlines
January 10 2019: submission of papers
Feb/March/April 2019: reviewer response
April 2019: BALEAP conference event and publication of first papers (if
ready!)
April/May/June revised submissions due (5 weeks after receipt of reviews)
June-Nov 2019: final publication of remaining papers, as they are completed
November 2019: editorial and volume completion
