Job Location: Iowa, USA
Web Address: https://clas.uiowa.edu/dwllc/
Job Title: Asst/Assoc Professor in the Acquisition of Syntax
Job Rank: Asst/Assoc Professor

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Syntax

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Iowa seeks to hire an
experimentally focused linguist whose research examines the acquisition and/or
learning of syntax, or that of the interfaces of syntax with other domains
(semantics, prosody, etc.). The ideal candidate will have primary expertise in
the fields of syntax and language acquisition (first, second, third, or
multiple) or learning (e.g., adaptation, plasticity), with a strong record of
experimental research in these areas. The appointment will be a tenure-track
or tenured position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor,
effective Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

Required qualifications:
- PhD in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, or
Communication Sciences and Disorders, in hand by August 2019
- Expertise in contemporary formal syntax, including the ability to teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in theoretical syntax and general
linguistics, as well as graduate courses in the candidate's area of
specialization
- A record of innovative research using experimental methodologies and
quantitative analysis to investigate issues in language acquisition and
learning

Desirable qualifications:
- Research at the interface of syntax and one or more other areas (including,
but not limited to, semantics, pragmatics, prosody)
- Expertise in a language that is represented in the Division of World
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Iowa
- Quantitative expertise such as statistics, computational linguistics, or
other approaches.

We particularly encourage candidates with a collaborative approach who
envision themselves working with theoreticians and experimentalists in a
variety of fields, and who can situate their study of acquisition and learning
in the broader study of cognition and/or other scientific fields. There are
many opportunities to contribute to programs committed to cross-disciplinary
inquiry and to develop ties to language scientists in DWLLC, as well as
Psychological and Brain Sciences, and Communication Sciences & Disorders.
Interdisciplinary groups such as the DeLTA Center (Development, Learning,
Theory and Application) and the Cognitive Science of Language Certificate
program will also facilitate such interactions.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an important role
in the Department of Linguistics by helping to shape its cross-disciplinary
language sciences initiative in the area of acquisition and learning, and will
figure prominently in the graduate certificate program in the Cognitive
Science of Language.
