Thematic number: Gamification
Transfer of game mechanics - such as points, badges, and leaderboards (PBL) -
from a specific game situation to classroom environment has gathered the
interest of teachers and researchers in the area of language learning, in what
has been described as gamification. Much of what happens when people play
games is what teachers would like to see with their students: intense
engagement in the activity, motivation to overcome the challenges, performance
beyond competence and potential for outperformance. Undoubtedly, along with
many similarities between game activity and language learning, there are many
differences as well. Investigating these possibilities and difficulties is the
main objective of this special edition. Suggested topics include, but are not
restricted to, game apps, aesthetic and ethical issues, game evaluation,
serious games, game literacy, flow theory.
