University or Organization: Universität Tübingen
Department: Department of General and Computational Linguistics
Job Location: Tübingen, Germany
Web Address: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/faculties/faculty-of-humanities/departments/modern-languages/department-of-linguistics/
Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow, Emmy-Noether Research Group
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Pragmatics; Semantics

Required Language(s): Slavic

Description:

The DFG-funded Emmy-Noether research group "Modal systems in historical Slavic
languages" invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position of up to
two years to start in August 2019 or later. In accordance with German law, the
position is open for women, men and people of other genders, and is consistent
with part-time employment if desired by the worker.

The Research Group:
The project "Modal systems in historical Slavic languages" studies expressions
of modality and futurity in the Slavic languages of the 14-17 centuries,
applying the methods of formal semantics and pragmatics to primary data from
historical texts, with particular focus on linguistic variation and language
contact effects both within and outside the Slavic.

Your Responsibilities:
- Analyze, together with the student assistants and the PI, primary Slavic
texts from the 14-17 centuries;
- Co-supervise the student assistants;
- Synthesize the scientific results and publish them as journal articles;
- Possibly co-organize a workshop on diachronic formal semantics;
- Continue developing their own research program.

There are no teaching obligations for this position, though limited teaching
at the University may be possible for candidates who would desire it.

Required Qualifications:
- A PhD in linguistics, in hand or imminent at the start of the position;
- Either (i) solid background in formal semantics and pragmatics and either
background or interest in historical linguistics; or (ii) solid background in
historical linguistics or variationist sociolinguistics, and considerable
training in formal semantics/pragmatics;
- Ability to work or quickly learn to work with historical Slavic texts, which
can be demonstrated either by proficiency in one or more Slavic languages, or
deep research experience with such, or documented experience of learning to
work with subtle semantic issues of unfamiliar languages;
- Ability to design a plan of research that would both serve the goals of the
project and advance the candidate's own research program.

Desired Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work, including engagement with language
contact studies, grammaticalization theory, variationist sociolinguistics,
history, migration studies and archaeology;
- Experience with grammaticalization in the verbal domain (for
historical-linguistic candidates) or modal and attitudinal semantics (for
semantics-pragmatics candidates).

Application Documents:
The deadline for application is May 15, 2019. Please send the following
materials to igor.yanovich at uni-tuebingen.de with "[postdoc]" in the subject
line:
- A CV
- A cover letter of 1.5-3 pages, outlining specifically: (a) how your
background prepares you for the work in the project; (b) what specific
research questions within the area of the project would most interest you if
you join the group; (c) how working on modality and futurity in historical
Slavic languages would help you develop your own research program.
- A general research statement of 1-2 pages (optional)
- Three letters of recommendation, to be sent to the application email
provided below by the deadline, with the name of the applicant in the subject
line

Important Additional Information:
The University seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and
therefore urges qualified women academics to apply.

Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference.

The employment will be carried out by the central administration of the
University of Tübingen.
